Stoddart Cup Week Two: Big Wins and Tight Battles on the Ice
Week two of the Stoddart Cup delivered everything curling fans could ask for — tight contests, big ends, and commanding performances from the league’s top skips.
The opening clash saw the competition’s top two teams go head-to-head in a tactical showdown. For the first five ends, Basil Baird and Graham Young traded single points in a tense back-and-forth. Baird’s rink looked to seize control with a brilliant deuce in the sixth to edge ahead 4–3, but Young’s team answered in style — picking up one in the seventh before sealing a hard-fought 7–4 victory with a decisive two in the final end.
Over on the next sheet, Stewart Barr’s team came out flying against Laura Nisbett’s rink, building a commanding 7–1 lead after five ends. Nisbett’s side battled back with a solid two in the sixth, but Barr’s squad was unstoppable, finishing strong with a four in the final end to wrap up a convincing 12–3 win.
The week’s finale proved even more one-sided. David Baird’s team came out firing, sweeping the first four ends to storm ahead 10–0 against Scott Baird’s rink. Scott’s team finally broke through with a two in the fifth, but David’s crew closed the door with wins in the final two ends, cruising to an emphatic 13–2 victory.
