Sweeps, Drams, and Drama: Midcalder’s Grand Match Story
Midcalder Curling Club proudly flew the flag for the South in the Indoor Grand Match — the largest curling event on the planet, played simultaneously across 12 rinks scattered throughout Scotland.
The Midcalder quartet of Graham Young, Alan Russell, Andrew Jack, and Abigail Rennie got off to a confident start, opening the match with a well-crafted two in the first end. Bridge of Allan answered immediately with a two of their own, and then edged ahead by stealing a single in the third.
Unfazed, Midcalder hit back with another two to take a narrow lead into the halfway break. Unfortunately, the traditional mid-match dram seemed to favour their opponents more than themselves. Bridge of Allan returned to the ice with renewed sharpness, sweeping up the final four ends with scores of 1, 1, 3, and 2, sealing a 10–4 victory.
There was still something to celebrate, though: the South triumphed overall, defeating the North by an impressive 1356–1287 across all matches — giving Midcalder a reason to raise a glass despite the result on their sheet.
