Tight Margins and Early Momentum in the Cousland Cup

Cousland Cup – Opening Games Review

The 2026 Cousland Cup got underway at Midcalder Curling Club with two competitive opening matches that set the tone for what promises to be a closely fought competition.

In Game A, Douglas Wood’s rink edged out James Baird in a tight encounter, securing a 7–6 victory. The match was finely balanced throughout, with neither side able to pull clear. Wood’s team showed strong consistency across the ends, managing to build and protect a narrow advantage that ultimately proved decisive. Baird’s rink stayed in contention to the final end but just fell short in a game that highlighted accurate draw weight and disciplined shot-making from both sides

Game B delivered plenty of drama, with John Sinclair overcoming Abigail Rennie by 9–7. Rennie’s rink started positively and kept the pressure on, but Sinclair responded well, producing a strong middle-to-late section of the game. A crucial count of four shots swung the momentum and gave Sinclair the edge, which his team held onto despite a determined finish from Rennie

With John Sinclair and Douglas Wood both recording opening wins, the early standings reflect just how competitive the field is. The opening night showcased a good mix of tactical play and shot execution, and if these games are any indication, the Cousland Cup is set for an exciting run as the competition unfolds.
