Baird Brushes Opposition Aside to Win Broom
Wow, What a final week in the Torphichen Broom competition. Going into the last week of competition three teams were still in the hunt to win the Torphichen Broom and ended up being one of the best since the Broom was first played back in 1895.
After five ends Neil Murray was beating Stewart Barr 6-3 and Ewan Hamilton was beating Basil Baird Jnr. 8-5, Which meant Ewan Hamilton would win the Broom as both teams above him in the league were losing. Both matches turned at this point, Stewart won the last two ends to win his match, Which meant Ewan Hamilton couldn't win the league. Basil Baird took a four in the 6th end and then stole the last two end with one's to win his game.
With Both Basil and Stewart tied on points and shots up it came down to ends won and with Basil's 20 ends to Stewart's 14 ends, Basil and his team of Andrew Brash (third), Harry Macpherson (second) and Richard Brown (lead) were left the Winners.
In the other match of the day Graham Young lost to Alan Russell to win the wooden spoon.
