Big Scores and Bold Comebacks as Torphichen Broom Gets Underway

Torphichen Broom — Match Report & Updated Standings

The 2026–2027 Torphichen Broom campaign got underway on Thursday evening with three competitive ties across the Murrayfield ice. Under the unique rules of the Torphichen Broom, teams holding the hammer must score at least two shots to register an end, while single-point hammer ends result in blanks and hammer turnover. Furthermore, penalty points incurred are directly awarded to the opposition.

Match Reports

Sheet 1: Stewart Barr 9 – 7 David Baird A classic encounter of two halves. David Baird flew out of the blocks, capitalizing on early precision to secure 4 shots in the 1st end and adding 3 in the 2nd for an imposing 7–0 advantage. Stewart Barr’s rink mounted a steady comeback, chipping away with deuces in ends 4, 6, and 8, alongside a single in the 7th. With +2 penalty shots awarded under Torphichen rules to Stewart Barr, the rink completed a 9–7 turnaround victory.

Sheet 2: Colin Howden 7 – 4 Ian Keron Ian Keron took the initiative early, stealing single shots across the 2nd, 3rd, and 8th ends. However, Colin Howden seized control midway through the match, executing decisive multi-point ends with a 3 in the 4th followed immediately by a 4 in the 5th to seal a 7–4 win

Sheet 3: James Baird 9 – 1 Graham Young James Baird established control from the opening stones, putting Graham Young under immediate pressure with 3 in the 1st end and a steal in the 2nd. Young answered with a point in the 5th, but Baird closed out the match in commanding style with a 5-ender in the 6th to run out 9–1 winners.
