High Drama on the Pebble: Big Ends and Late Thrills in Round 1

Stoddart Cup — Match Report & Updated Standings

A gripping opening night of Round 1 action saw plenty of drama across both sheets, featuring a resilient hold-out on Sheet 1 and an absolute 17-shot rollercoaster on Sheet 2.

Sheet 1: Young Weathers Nisbet’s Comeback Surge

Team 2 (Graham Young) 7 – 5 Team 3 (Laura Nisbet)

Graham Young’s rink stormed out of the blocks, setting the standard with clinical draw weight and tidy front-end play. Taking consecutive scores across the opening three ends (1, 2, and 2), Young established an imposing 5–0 lead by the third-end break.

Laura Nisbet’s team refused to let the game slip away quietly. Showing great resolve, they chipped away with single points in Ends 4 and 5 before ramping up the pressure in the 6th to take a two, narrowing the deficit to 5–4 and setting up a tense finale.

Young responded decisively in the 7th end, securing a crucial deuce to restore a three-shot cushion at 7–4. Despite Nisbet securing a single in the 8th, Young closed out a hard-earned 7–5 victory.

Sheet 2: Barr Overcomes Early Deficit in High-Scoring Thriller

Team 4 (Douglas Wood) 7 – 10 Team 5 (Stewart Barr)

Sheet 2 provided fireworks from start to finish. Douglas Wood took command early, opening with a clinical three-ender in the 1st. After trading singles, Wood added another single in the 4th end to carry a commanding 5–1 advantage into the midpoint.

The momentum swung violently in the 5th end. Stewart Barr’s rink piled counting stones into the four-foot, capitalizing on missed runbacks to score a massive 5-ender and flip the contest to 6–5 in their favor.

Wood hit back immediately with a gritty two in the 6th to regain the lead at 7–6. However, Barr seized control in the penultimate end, producing a decisive three-point score in the 7th before stealing a single in the 8th to wrap up a breathless 10–7 win.
