International Gathering

It was a confused start to the first game with Mid Calder team members being delayed by traffic jams but Becca Baird and Jean Carruthers stepped in to join Jim Wyllie and Harry Russell to take on the Curling Maniacs from Sweden (Sven Ullstad, Tor Fossom , Henrik Gustafssen and guest player John Glidden). Harry Macpherson finally turned up after two ends (having been on the road for 2 hours)  and Jean made way. At this point we were down 3 - 0.  However, the team rallied and after some fine play ran out winners at 8 - 4.

In the second game against the Caledonian team of  Roddy Watson,  Ronnie Hope, Jim Ramsay and Pam Ramsay, the  Mid Calder average age dropped a little as the Juniors, David Baird, James Baird, George Sinclair and Becca Baird (yes - straight back on again) took over. I could say this was a very close game - but you would think otherwise when I say the final score was 9 - 2. In favour of our Juniors who played to the high standard we expect of them now.  Well done. Two games  = two wins.

No pressure on Basil Baird and his team on Saturday morning at 0900, Basil Baird, Richard Brown, George Sinclair, Rebecca Baird. (yes, she is on again)

Day 2.

Pressure? What pressure?

The third game in the round robin was against the “Easy Curlers” from Lausanne, in Switzerland. The Mid Calder team of Becca Baird, Ricky Brown, George Sinclair and Basil Baird were 3 all after two ends. After a single and a three in the next two ends, the lead stretched to  7 – 3.  However, a three by the Swiss brought the score back to 7 – 6.  Last end and all in the balance.  No pressure. Game on.  However, Mid Calder held on for a single to win 8 – 6. Three games = three wins. Now teams are re-arranged  into new sections. With 3 wins Mid Calder will probably be in group 1 or 2.

Christine Hamilton, Andrew Brash, Harry Russell and Jean Brash now carry the torch into the deciding games.  Enjoy the curling.

Christine's rink met the Ice Technicians in the first round of Section 1. We came second

Second round of Section 1 was against Kelso Reivers. Alan Russell's team of Andrew Brash, Jean Brash and Alan Graham played well and had a fine win.

Into the final game, again skipped by Alan with  Scott Baird, David Baird and Harry Macpherson. The DAFS team was supported by Ken Hunter as skip.

Both teams played well but Mid Calder ran out winners with 9 - 2.

The Ice Technicians won all 3 games and so were overall winners

Some familiar faces.

Not too bad for Mid Calder - finishing runners up overall.

A good weekend enjoyed by all. Well done Penicuik for the organisation
