Midcalder Ends Season On A High At Gathering

Midcalder were back in action at this years Edinburgh International Curlers' Gathering held at Murrayfield Curling Rink.  There were sixteen players representing Midcalder Curling Club over the weekend against thirteen International teams and fifteen Scottish teams. The competition has seven groups of four, with a re-rank after three games and then after another three games.

The competition got under way with Marion Mulholland, Isobel Brydie, Lorna Scott and Kate Abbott taking on Corriefisters of Scotland. This was a close game which saw Midcalder come up just short losing 5-3.  The afternoon game saw Basil Baird, Alan Russell, John Sinclair and Lynne McEwen playing Trevolution of Switzerland. Midcalder were on the back foot early on in the game and were unable to read the ice as they went down 9-1.

Day two got underway with Basil Baird, Alan Russell, Callum Wood and Ian Provan playing against Victoria of Russia. Midcalder finally got their first win of the competition after they controlled the middle part of the game to run out 11-4 winners.  The result didn't help Midcalder as they finished bottom of the group tied on two points with Corriefisters and Victoria (although they were only one end away from finishing second in the group).  After the re-ranking, Midcalder were placed in Group F.  Basil Baird, Alan Russell, Alan Graham and Jim Wilson took on Nic Nacs of Norway. Midcalder got off to a good start in the match and the group after they won this game 7-4.

The third and final day got underway with Jim Wylie, Scott Baird,  David Baird and Rebecca Baird versus Alba of Scotland.  After building up a good lead in this match Midcalder found themselves in a bit of trouble in the last end.  But Jim Wylie saved the day when he drew through two stones to lie on the button and win the game 7-2.  The last game of the competition saw Scott Baird, David Baird, Jim Wilson and Rebecca Baird playing Duddingston/ Aegon of Scotland. Midcalder had to come from behind twice in this game before they ran out 7-3 winners. The win saw Midcalder top Group F with six points and win the trophy.

Well done to all the Midcalder Curling Club members who took part during the weekend. It was a great way to finish the season.
