Bob's Sorrow Is Basil's Delight
Well, as the Winter Olympic Games came to an end, So did this seasons Torphichen Broom and it will go down as one of the closest titles ever.
Bob Graham had one hand on the trophy as his team held a one point lead going into the final week games. His opponents in the final game was Stewart Barr's team and it was Bob's team that looked as they were on course to win the games and the Title as they held a 6-2 lead after five ends. But the last three ends saw the title slip away. Stewart's team scored a two, followed by a one to close the gap to one point going into the last end. The last end saw Stewart's team lying two shots with just Bob's last stone to come. With his final shot needing to finish in the four foot circle to win, the other two rinks stood and watched as Bob's final stone approached the house and then slid through the house leaving Stewart's team lying two and winning the game 7-6.
With the door to the title being blown open after Bob's defeat, Ewan Hamilton and Basil Baird were both still in the hunt for the title now. Basil Baird's team made the best start after blanking the first end, they then won the next three ends to lead 5-0. Ewan's team then got off the board when they scored a three in the fifth end, but then Basil's team took control of the game after scoring four points over the next two ends. Ewan scored a two in the last end, but lost the game to Basil 9-5.
Graham Young's team was the last team that could win the title but got off to a bad start when he missed the start of the game. Alan Russell's team took advantage of Graham's absence when raced into 5-0 lead after two ends. They continued their pressure on Graham's team when they extended their lead to 9-2 after five ends. Graham's team had a late rally when the scored five points over the next two ends, but it was Alan's team that ran out winners after scoring a two in the last end, to win the match 11-7.
So after all the games were played, It was Basil Baird's team that took the title on shots difference form Stewart Barr's team after both teams finished with six points.
So close was this seasons contest, all the teams were separated by just two points. They were also only three ends difference between most scored ends to least.
Well done to Basil's and his team of John Sinclair, John Baird and Kenny Findlay for winning the 2013-2014 Torphichen Broom.
