Russell Takes His First Broom Title
It was another classic last day in this season's Torphichen Broom Competition with two teams still in the hunt for the title. Alan Russell held the top position knowing a win or a draw would be enough for the title with Graham Young needing a win over Stewart Barr and for Alan to lose for his team to win the title.
Alan's team held the early advantage when they stole a 2 in the second end against Ewan Hamilton's team to lead 2-0 and with Stewart taking a single in the second end against Graham to lead 1-0. Graham's team moved into top gear scoring a 2 and a 3 in the next two ends to lead 5-1 and with Ian Keron skipping in place of recovering Ewan scoring a 2 to draw level with Alan the title could go any way. Stewart's team bounced back scoring two 2's to draw level again with Graham, but Alan missed his chance to lead again when his draw for a 2 in the sixth end came up just short leaving the game still tied. In the last end, Alan's team didn't make any mistakes as they stole a single to win the match 3-2 and win the Torphichen Broom title. Graham was unable to score in the last end leaving their game tied at 5-5.
The weeks last match was no lesser affair with Basil Baird and Bob Graham fighting it out to see who would win the wooden spoon. Basil's team got off to a great start when the scored a 3 and a 2 in the first two ends to lead 5-0. The next three ends were blanked before Bob's team closed the gap by scoring a 2 in the sixth end, but it was Basil's team that would win the basement challenge by blanking the last end to win the match 5-2 leaving Bob Graham with the Wooden Spoon!
