A Grand Day Out

Midcalder Curling Club had two teams representing the south in the 4th Indoor Grand Match. Midcalder One of Alan Russell, Graham Wood, Andrew Brash & Jean Carruthers were playing Newport Curling Club at Murrayfield Curling Rink and Midcalder Two of Basil Baird, Stewart Barr, John Sinclair & John Baird were playing Moray Ladies at Curl Aberdeen.
Midcalder One got off to a slow start against Newport and found themselves 5-1 down after three ends, they did manage to close the gap to 5-3 after they scored two singles to take them up to the stacking of the brooms and some lite refreshments. Their hopes were broken after the break when they lost a 2 in the sixth end to trail 7-3, but they never gave up, they scored a 4 in the seventh to tie the match and then stole a 3 in the last end to win the match 10-7. After the match, they were some more drinks, great food and very sociable company.

Midcalder Two were so keen to play their match that they turned up in plenty time for the middle session to find out that they were playing in the late session! They then managed to get some soup before it was realised that they should not be getting lunch. They then headed off for some refreshments before getting changed for the game. Stewart had organised tartan trousers for the team, John Baird's failed in the dressing room, Basil's made it for the first end and Stewarts and John Sinclairs made it through the game. When they finally got onto the ice they got off to a good start by scoring a single followed by a 2 in the second. John Baird managed to draw two shots into the house in the third end, this was seemingly followed by four fantastic shots to leaving all six Midcalder stones in the house. Basil then hit and rolled to lay 7 shots, Moray Ladies skip drew a nice shot to the 4 ft. Basil had a shot to hit the red through a port and lie for a potential 8! Unfortunately, the stone rolled a bit to far. Moray Ladies skip last stone came up short of the house leaving Midcalder lying 7. The team could do no wrong now winning every end until the last end, where Moray Ladies scored a single in the seventh end giving Midcalder a 17-1 victory. The game was followed by a lovely meal, great company and presentation of prizes. Midcalder won most shots up for the session.

Back at Murrayfield, the prize giving for the overall trophy was presented by Alan Steel of Alan Steel Asset Management the competition sponsors to the South of Scotland after a 2154-1928 win over the North of Scotland.
