Bob's Brydie Success
Midcalder Curling Club held their first competition of the season when they played for the Brydie Bonspiel. All the matches were very close at times, big leads built up and then lost, shots were drawn in then taken out, shouts of sweep rang out across the rinks and after all that, the clinking of glasses after the match. Curling was back!
First game up was Graham Young and his team of Graham Wood, George Sinclair and Alan Crawford taken on David Baird and his team of Rebecca Baird, Ewan Barr and Scott Barbour. Graham's team held a narrow 4-3 lead after four ends, then increased the lead to 5 points after the sixth end. David managed to score a 2 in the last end, but it was Graham's team that finished with an 8-5 victory.
The second Game saw Alan Russell and his team of Alan Ogilvie, Ian Provan and Elis Knight taking on Basil Baird, Ian Keron, Marion Mulholland and Jean Carruthers. Basil's team got off to a great start in this match leading 5-0 after two ends. Alan's team bounced back when they won the next four ends to lead the match 6-5, but Basil recovered to score a 2 in the last end to win the match 7-6.
The last match of the bonspiel saw Stewart Barr, Harry Macpherson, Callum Wood and Lynne McEwen take on Bob Graham, John Sinclair, Jim Wilson and Grant Knight. Another fast start, this time from Bob's team saw them open up a 4-0 lead after two ends. Stewart's team got right back into the match when they won the next three ends to lead the match 4-3. Bob's reply was quick, a 6 in the sixth end blasted them back into the lead and despite losing a 2 in the last end it was bob's team that won the match 10-6.
Congratulations to Bob Graham, John Sinclair, Jim Wilson and Grant Knight for winning the Brydie Bonspiel with +4 shots.
Graham Young, Graham Wood, George Sinclair and Alan Crawford were runners up on +3 to win the Howden Shield.
