On Saturday, January 24th Alan and Jennifer Russell and Andrew and Jean Brash took part in Penicuik’s Curling Club Bicentenary Bonspiel. Period dress was the order of the day making curling a little more difficult for the ladies! The opening ceremony included a welcome from Sir Robert Clerk of Penicuik and the Penicuik Pipe Band. Sir Robert threw the ceremonial stone to mark the beginning of the competition.
In the first game, Mid Calder played Team Bambi from Denmark. It was a close fought game with Midcalder winning in the last end with a final score of 4-3. In the second game, Midcalder played DAFS. Midcalder got of to a great start leading 7-0 after three ends. After a mid game blip, Midcalder went on to win the game 10-4. Midcalder finished just 1 shot off the prizes on +6 shots with Corstorphine winning overall with +15 shots, Club 37 second with +7 shots and Penicuik third on +7 shots. Looking on it was a great sight to see everyone dressed up in celebration of the first Grand Match on Penicuik Loch
Back in our normal attire, the evening dinner was held at Edinburgh Capital Hotel. Dinner was followed by presentations to the Penicuik Club and we were entertained by John O’Neil from Dudingston Curling Club. This was a great opportunity to mix together with the members of the Penicuik Club and 20 other invited teams to mark a historic occasion in their history.
